When we were designing our plant, we thought a lot about minimizing our carbon footprint. We realized that, using the 80/20 rule, our biggest contributors were truck emissions and the energy usage in the plant, so these became the focus of our effort. On a busy day 20 trucks come in and out of our plant, most of which carry fresh whey that is 95% water. By moving our site closer to our suppliers the site we ended up choosing reduced our carbon footprint by 300,000 lbs per year. Even more savings came from our extensive use of recovered heat and cross flow heat exchange. Taken together, these two elements saved 1.8 Million lbs of CO2 per year – the equivalent of 156 fewer cars on the road.
